Project Overview
Xcel Energy is building a better, cleaner energy future by taking steps to create a smarter and stronger energy grid, for a more secure energy supply. This commitment includes replacing infrastructure reaching the end of its useful life.
We plan to replace the 65-year-old Fruita to Uintah 69-kilovolt (kV) transmission line near Fruita, Colorado. The 4-mile line is critical to providing reliable service to
customers and cannot be taken out of service to be replaced so the line rebuild project includes two key construction activities:
- Build a new 4.4 mile, 69-kV
transmission line - Decommission the existing 69-kV line,
removing poles and components
The existing line was built in 1956. Due to natural weathering and the overall age of the poles and equipment, the line has reached the end of its useful life and must
be replaced. The transmission line will be rebuilt to current industry standards that include additional measures to reduce wildfire risk. New infrastructure will improve electric service reliability to homes and businesses in the region and help meet the growing energy needs for years to come.
Public outreach and communications
Xcel Energy hosted an in-person open house in February 2022 and posted a video of the presentation content here (external link) to provide information known at that time about the project, answer questions and take public comment about potential route options. A follow up meeting was held in July 2022 at the Fruita Community Center. A preferred route was chosen based on natural resources, engineering, construction, land use, permitting requirements, land acquisition and public comments, and Xcel Energy recently filed an application with Mesa County for permits to begin construction.
