Kestrel 230-kV Interconnection Project

Project Overview

Xcel Energy proposes to extend an existing 230-kilovolt (kV) electric transmission line to connect and serve a new customer in the City of Aurora, in Adams and Arapahoe counties.

At Xcel Energy, we’re more than an energy provider. We’re committed to partnering with businesses to meet their unique needs and supporting the communities we serve with clean, reliable and affordable energy. Our proposed project will help create full-time, high paying jobs, and drive greater environmental benefits through the increased use of clean energy resources.

Project Description

The proposed 230-kV extension will be a double-circuit transmission line on fire-resistant steel single-pole structures. Staff engineers and planners recommend placing the interconnector line in an industrial area south of Interstate 70 and east of Gun Club Road. Less than two miles in length, the new line will connect with a nearby Xcel Energy 230-kV line and extend to our proposed Kestrel Substation at the customer’s facility—a planned 80-acre data-center campus.

We conducted a routing study and held an open house during fall 2022 and met with local officials about the proposed project. Based on our study and input received, we will submit requests for permits from all applicable agencies. Our preferred rout minimizes community and environmental impact while meeting engineering and safety standards.
